March 24, 2017: On Thursday, March 16, 2017, Dr. Luz Longsworth was inducted as the third Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Open Campus. The induction ceremony took place in Belize, where Dr. Longsworth is a naturalised citizen, having served in the country through various capacities in academia and business.

Walcott, an alumnus of The UWI Mona Campus, graduated in 1953 and was awarded an honorary (DLitt) in 1973. His literary works are known and lauded internationally and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992.

Office of the Principal, Jamaica, January 27, 2017: The University of the West Indies, Open Campus regrets the passing of Professor George E. Eaton, Caribbean scholar and public servant. Professor Eaton, at the time of his death, was the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Education Institute: Consortium for Social Development and Research, UWI, Open Campus, and Professor Emeritus of Economics and Political Science and Senior Scholar at York University, Toronto, Canada.
I had just returned from my walk on the beach where I watched the rosy fingered dawn herald the rising of a brilliant Caribbean sun to open my computer and learn of the setting of another brilliant Caribbean son. Caribbean he was by birth and inclination and brilliant he showed himself to be through decades of persistent and insistent efforts to foster the growth and human development of his beloved OECS, not only for their sake but for the benefit of the wider Caribbean. All current members of the academic staff, the senior administrative staff, and the professional staff (excluding executive management, registrars, bursars, part-time staff, and retired staff who have been re-hired on post-retirement contracts) who have been in the continuous service of the university for at least 5 years prior to the application or nomination are eligible. Eligibility is also open to departments / units, where appropriate.
