Certificate NGO Professional Management

Introduction

The NGO Professional Management Certificate is being undertaken as part of a partnership arrangement between The University of the West Indies Open Campus and the Caribbean Policy Development Centre. The NGO Professional Management Certificate is an initiative under the Civil Society Regional Development Project, which is funded by the European Union.

This continuing education certificate in NGO Professional Management comprised of two courses with 80 contact hours (40 contact hours per course), is designed to accommodate individuals seeking core business knowledge in professional management training in relation to non-government organizations. The programme emphasizes course work that covers the major disciplines within the field of Professional Management as it relates to NGOs.

This programme is designed to build capacity of the Non-Governmental Sector in the Caribbean through the implementation of a number of specific actions. Summarily these actions focus on strengthening the enabling environment within which NGOs presently function, including activities that promote NGO’s institutional and organizational capabilities through a number of core thematic areas: - addressing the legislative environment, promoting greater transparency within the sector, project management skills development, enhanced regional policy dialogue and improving access to small grants.

By the end of the programme, learners will have acquired the key competencies to:

  • Apply principles to analyse current developmental issues in the management of NGOs in both the local and Caribbean environments;
  • Recognize the types of budgeting policies and procedures that facilitate effective budget-building;
  • Identify accounting controls and the system used to manage the flow of information to produce accurate and timely reports;
  • Create a fundraising plan with diverse sources of revenue and support;
  • Develop mechanisms to monitor the fundraising plan and communicate results to stakeholders; and
  • Identify the multi-faceted context in which a grant proposal is generated and reviewed.

Who is the programme for?

The target audiences for this programme are persons involved in Non-Governmental and Community Based Organisations from across fifteen (15) CARIFORUM member states targeting seventy-five (75) NGOs. 

When will the Programme Start?

The programme will commence in January 2018 and is designed to be delivered online over 13 weeks.

What is the purpose of the programme?

The purpose of this programme is to develop and deliver a formal and applied training programme in NGO Professional Management to enhance the skillset and capacity of NGO personnel. This programme also ensures that the necessary competencies in relation to effective NGO management are transferred and imparted in critical areas relevant to project management and advocacy.

The Continuing Professional Education NGO Professional Management Certificate will comprise of the following:

Two (2) Courses each with 40 contact hours and equivalent to 4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs);

Entry Requirements

Caribbean Policy Development Centre (CPDC) Members will be given first preference in applying.

Applicants should possess the following:

  • Five (5) CXC subjects or equivalent, an associate degree or relevant professional experience at the management level or higher.
  • Applicants to the programme should also have a minimum of two (2) years professional experience working in a Non-Governmental Organisation/Community Based Organisation or related field.
  • Other relevant professional experience will also be considered for the basis of entry.

How much will this programme cost?

The course fee per student is US $400 per course and US $800 for the programme. The Caribbean Policy Development Centre (CPDC) will provide a scholarship to some applicants if they meet the University's academic requirements.

How to Apply?

Mode of Delivery

The programme will be delivered fully online using the Open Campus “Learning Exchange” environment (Moodle/Learning Management System).

Assessment Structure

The programme consists of formative and summative assessments and is assessed by 100% coursework.

Educational Resources

Where appropriate, materials will be made available to learners online in the Open Campus Learning Exchange for download. Participants will be required to procure recommended textbooks using their own resources to acquire them via online or hard copy purchases.

Requirements for the Award Certificate

In order to qualify for the award of the NGO Professional Management Certificate Programme, students must attain a total of 80 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEU).
